Building Trust, One Step at a Time

Preschool 1

This week marked a very special milestone for our new Preschool 1 children! For most it was their first time attending childcare! For many, it was their first time being away from family, stepping into a new space filled with unfamiliar faces, sounds, and routines.

As families arrived, there were a mix of emotions: smiles, nervous glances, quiet tears, and warm cuddles. Our educators welcomed each child gently, offering comfort, calm voices, and open arms. Some children were eager to explore right away, while others held back, observing from the safety of their caregiver’s side.

Inside the room, the environment was carefully prepared to feel safe, calm, and inviting. Soft lighting was set up, cozy reading/calming area nooks were set up, calming activities were set up. These little touches helped children settle in at their own pace.

Throughout the morning, we noticed beautiful moments of connection and curiosity.
Some found the baby dolls and began rocking one gently, mimicking what she sees at home. Some children stayed close to an educator but watched the other children build towers with blocks. Another child was unsure at first, but when she discovered the colouring table, she smiled and began colouring with multiple colours across the paper. One child got sad and was able to use his family photo to look at and hold onto to help comfort through out the day.
During group time, children listened to a short story and sang songs together. Some joined in; others simply watched. But every child was part of the experience in their own way.

We also explored the outdoor space, where the sandbox, watched and helped Jenny while she watered the garden and use the different toys quickly became favourite spots. Laughter began to emerge, and so did confidence.

What the Children Are Learning:
• Emotional regulation – Managing feelings in a new setting with support from familiar routines and trusted adults.
• Social development – Watching, imitating, and slowly interacting with peers.
• Sense of belonging – Seeing family photos, singing together, and being greeted by name.
• Independence – Unpacking bags, choosing activities, and asking for help when needed.
• Communication – Expressing needs through words, gestures, and expressions.

These first days in daycare are filled with powerful learning. Every small step, walking through the door, reaching for a toy, or smiling at a peer, shows us that the children are building trust in their environment. As educators, our role is to offer patience, predictability, and gentle encouragement. We are so proud of each child and excited to watch them grow.
