Our toddlers have begun to notice the many signs of spring—trees budding with leaves and flowers starting to bloom. To bring that excitement indoors, we created a floral shop in the dramatic play centre, where the children could step into the role of little florists. Using their imaginations, they created beautiful flower arrangements with bright colours and soft textures, turning the centre into a rich sensory experience.
Manipulating the artificial flowers encouraged hand strength and coordination, while sorting them by colour helped build early math skills. Many of our toddlers demonstrated growing confidence in colour recognition.
Our floral shop remained open for exploration throughout the month, giving the children many opportunities to return and engage with the materials. During their play, we heard plenty of conversations: Lyle proudly shared that his bouquet was for his mom, Presley happily declared his arrangement was “for me!”, and Eva carefully stored hers in her cubby to take home.
It was a joy to see our toddlers so immersed in their play, and especially heartwarming to watch them pause to stop and “smell” the flowers.
Our floral dramatic play shop offered children a hands-on introduction to flowers and plants, how they grow, and the wonders of nature.
We’ve taken our floral shop fun beyond the classroom and into the garden beds on our playground. We are excited to watch our seeds grow into beans and zucchini.
