Rubber Band Toss Game

School-age 2

This month, the children were introduced to a Thai traditional game called: “rubber band toss game” After explaining the rules and how to play the game a small group of children were excited to try. Once the game had been played for about five minutes, a few more children who had been observing the play asked if they could join the game. The children invited them to join and explained how to play and the rules to new players. “First, you need one best rubber band to be your tosser, then aim at those rubber bands that the educator put on the desk. If your tosser goes on top of the other rubber bands, you are allowed to keep them. They nodded. The children lined up nicely for their turn to play. Some turns they get disappointed as they didn’t get any rubber bands. Quietly they went to the back of the line waiting for another try. When the game was finished, the children happily counted the rubber bands they possessed and some children shared their rubber bands with peers who came after the game was finished. Unexpectedly the children extended their play by chaining their rubber bands together and they became new activities. They showcased their new play materials to educators and peers. “I made a whip”, “I made a necklace”, “I made a skip rope”, “I’m making armbands” they exclaimed excitedly. Through this experience provides the children opportunities to enhance their social skills, hand eye coordination, concentration, sharing, cooperation and practicing creativity, also develop new skills, persists in trying more attempts when facing challenges as first attempts are not successful.
