Bread in a Bag

Toddler 1

One morning we put on our bakers’ hats and made some bread in a bag. Throughout this experience the children enhanced some foundational skills in math (measuring and counting), science (changes in matter), and literacy skills (following steps). We all sat around the table and started the process. We took turns in measuring all the ingredients we needed as Sara helped us follow the recipe.  As the children were helping pour and mix the ingredients, it was helping them enhance their fine motor skills. We also had to practice some patience in this recipe! The recipe stated that we had to wait 10 minutes for the yeast to activate.  As we were waiting, we were talking about who likes to bake at home. Brayden was very excited to tell us that he likes to bake strawberry muffins at home with his mommy. We then talked about what we saw in the bag, and Fiya said that she saw some bubbles. Educator Sara explained that was the yeast becoming active. This allowed the children to explore cause and effect.

While the children were sleeping Sara placed our bread into the oven to cook. Unfortunately, the bread didn’t turn out, and that’s okay! We will try again another time, and hopefully it will then work. Maybe next time we can add different spices to the bread like rosemary, thyme, or garlic!

We have included a picture of the recipe and would love to hear if you try it at home!
