Exploring Culture and Traditions

Preschool 1

In Preschool 1 at RisingOaks Early Learning | St. Brigid, we have been making a conscious effort to include a wider variety of holidays and traditions in our program. We’ve been learning about two different types of traditions, Diwali, the Slovakian name day, and most recently, Lohri celebrations.

In the Punjab region of India, Lohri marks the passing of winter solstice and celebrates the coming of longer days. This is celebrated with lights, bright colours, and kite flying. Educator Joban shared this exciting tradition with us that he grew up with by inviting our group to make kites with him as they talked about what Lohri was and how it is celebrated.

Children used bright coloured paper and tissue paper to create their kite base and attached pipe cleaners for stability, similar to kites seen in real life experiences. With this, they were able to take a small piece of our celebration home with them to share what they learned with others.
