This month we used nature to make art! The week before while on our walk, educator Michelle noticed the infants reaching for and pulling at leaves, trees, bushes and flowers. We thought it would be fun for the infants to pick some of those items and use them to make something beautiful! To prepare for the activity, Michelle used some cardboard and cut a hole in the middle, she then used tape to fill the centre, having the sticky side facing up. The educators brought the boards with them on their walk, all ready for the children to make art with.
During the walk, educators Katie and Michelle encouraged the children to pick and pull whatever they wanted while we walked through neighborhoods and parks. Once we had a variety of different items collected we stopped at the gazebo in Centennial Park to get out and put our art together! The infants babbled and smiled as Michelle placed the boards and nature items down in the middle so everyone could reach. Everyone dug in, playing and exploring leaves, flowers, and grass. We talked about the textures we felt, and how nice the boards looked when all the nature was stuck to it.
This activity was great for fine motor play as well as language development! We have placed our artwork up in our window and anytime the infants walk past they point, smile or babble while looking at their beautiful creation!
