Taking Care of Our Plants

Toddler 1

When we got back from the holidays, educator Trish noticed that our classroom plants needed some extra care and attention. Our classroom plants have been knocked over many times and the soil has dried up so it was time to repot them. Trish invited the children to come and help her. Our first step was to remove the old soil showing the children the roots. “They looked like worms!” Trish announced, while Ferris made a face and agreed! We all took turns scooping soil into the pot while Trish talked about how the soil helps give the plant new food to grow and stay strong. Since the whole group wanted a turn to help, we all had to practice patience. When our turns were over, we gave the shovel to the next friend. Evelyn, Ferris, and Fiya seemed to be very interested and engaged as they lingered close by to get second and third turns. What an excellent job we did repotting our classroom plants~

Through this activity the children got to learn about what plants need to grow. We talked about how we have to be gentle and try not to knock the plants over anymore. We will continue to do more gardening since spring will be here before we know it!
