We're Going On an Egg Hunt!

Toddler 2

In the last week of March, we introduced eggs into the kitchen centre, which quickly sparked the toddlers’ interest. The toddlers were so excited to collect them and incorporate them into their play, using them in pretend cooking. Some of the toddlers even tried to crack the eggs, but unfortunately, they didn’t open. The children added the eggs into pans and bowls as they talked about the eggs and the different things they could do with them.

When the toddlers came back from the Easter long weekend, they were so excited to share stories about the egg hunts they went on.  Some of the toddlers were talking about what they found in their eggs, like chocolate!  Throughout the week we read some different Easter books and searched for the eggs illustrated through the books, some were hiding behind the flowers, the house, etc.

One afternoon, the toddlers woke up from their naps to a big surprise! There were eggs hidden throughout our classroom. One by one, they set off with their baskets to find them. The children practiced using their fine motor skills to open the eggs, which was a little tricky! The educators showed the children a trick by squeezing the eggs to pop them open! Inside the eggs, they found stickers, which some of the toddlers decided to share by placing them on their friends’ hands or shirts, while others carefully stuck them onto paper.

After the toddlers found all the eggs throughout the classroom they decided to start hiding them again so other friends could re-find them! There were some really creative hiding spots. We thought about how else the toddlers could use the eggs in different ways, and decided to add letters to the eggs, an upper case and a lower case on each side of the egg shell. Walter was so excited and started naming the different letters he saw, “W for Walter, D for Daddy, N for Noah!” Noah also picked out the N and said “N for Noah” and held onto the egg. The toddlers were very creative with the eggs and brought them to the kitchen and used them by cracking the eggs into bowls and transferring them from cup to cup.  Another day we set up a ramp with eggs. The toddlers took turns rolling the eggs down the ramp into the basket! The toddlers were very creative with all the ways they could use the eggs!

The toddlers seemed to really enjoy all the ways we can use eggs, I wonder what else we could do with them? Maybe wash the eggs, or see if the eggs sink or float. How did you use your eggs over the long weekend?
