Swipe, Swap, Goal!

To continue to encourage following direction skills, and sharing skills, we explored with various Items to continue on building these skills.

Today Jessica prepared an indoor hockey game for the children to play. Jessica gave each child a flyswatter and poured plastic balls onto the floor for the children to swipe and swap.

The children had so much fun. They were swiping the balls all around the room, running and chasing the balls. Some of the children tried to use the fly swatter to scoop the balls like a shovel, some of them tried to hit the balls with the fly swatter, and some of them use the fly swatter like a broom.

After swiping the balls for a while, Jessica asked the children if they can find yellow balls to swipe and the children would look around the floor and hit the yellow balls. The children carefully followed the direction to only use the fly swatter to hit the balls and not each other.

The children were able to show the skill of sharing during this activity. When a child had two fly swatters in their hand, they would share one to the peer who didn’t have one.

At the end of the activity, Jessica had another idea. She put a bridge shape climber onto the floor to see if the children would try to swipe the balls into the hole, and they did. This kind of looked like mini golf!

This activity allows the children to build hand-eye coordination, gross and fine motor skills, spatial awareness, grasping skills, and language and social skills. Now Jessica wonders what other sport can we do indoor next?
