Loose Part Building

Program Name: Preschool 1

The children had been showing an interest in building with the different blocks provided to them within the classroom lately, so the educators used this interest and built upon it.  An educator found pictures of famous buildings and landmarks throughout the world, laminated them and hung them in the block area to give the children inspiration when creating their own structures. Another educator brought in various loose parts and laid them out on a tray to see what the children would do with them. Promise immediately gravitated to the popsicle sticks and began creating every letter of the alphabet. Kai, Charlotte and Elia explored the roll of tape, ripping pieces off and taping straws and sticks together. The other children used the materials in various ways and explored what was put out, but no one actually built any type of structure.

The following week the same materials were put out, to see if anything new would be done with them. Elijah took some straws and popsicle sticks and made a race track for his cars.  He also used these materials along with some tape and made a swing. Ezra and Adam took all of the cups and straws, setting them up on the shelf and began making coffee and pie for their peers. This inspired other children to begin to create their own favourite treats, such as ice cream, cake and cookies.

This activity allowed for the children to express themselves creatively and engage with various types of materials that allowed for imaginative play. They got to experience different ways of putting the objects together (when using tape) and used real life experiences to engage with their peers (eating at a restaurant). Everyone was able to share their thoughts and ideas when creating with the items and sharing and turn taking was seen throughout the course of playing.
