Decorating Names With Buttons

Preschool 1

The children in Preschool 1 at RisingOaks Early Learning | St. Brigid got to engage in a name recognition activity for National Button Day! The educators set out a variety of buttons and the children’s names on laminated paper. At first the children enjoyed placing the buttons inside the circular letters of their names. Educator Hilary asked the children to try and put the buttons in a line on the first letter of their names. More children came over to engage in the activity, some children asking for help to put the buttons on the lines while others put the buttons where the lines joined.

This activity fosters the children’s knowledge of the letters of their names and enhances their fine motor skills by using their pincer grasp to pick up the different sized buttons, in a fun and different way!

To continue to encourage teamwork and being open to suggestions and ideas, we could explore with other various items and continue to build on these creations using different materials.

The next steps for this learning would be to continue using the name cards that the educators made to encourage the children to learn the letters of their names as well as how to write their name.
