Vegetable Soup!

Preschool 2

This month in Preschool 2, the children have been very interested and engaged in “cooking” together. One activity they seemed to really enjoy was making our very own “soup.” Between the educators and the children, they created a list of ingredients. “We need water,” Colin said. “We need food,” Nika said. “Maybe we can eat it!” Owen said excitedly. They continued to create their list with the educator. Once their list was complete they searched around the classroom for the play food, water, salt and flour. The educator placed all the ingredients on the table along with utensils the children found. They gathered spatulas, whisks, spoons, and bowls. Then one by one the children used their fine motor skills to pick up salt, flour and vegetables to add to the bowl. They each took a turn mixing all the ingredients together. Once they were happy with all their ingredients combined, they found smaller bowls to “serve” the soup to their peers. This activity allowed them to work together on their team building, social, communication and turn taking skills. Moving forward the children seem to be interested in more experiences regarding cooking and baking. We will incorporate this into our programming in the upcoming months.
