Preschool 2

A simple cardboard box holds endless possibilities in a child’s imagination. At RisingOaks Early Learning | John Sweeney, the Preschool 2 children eagerly embraced the creative potential of boxes, transforming them into exciting worlds of play, learning, and connection.

From the moment the children were given boxes of different sizes, the excitement was immediate. Their first creation was a set of cradles, carefully placing their baby dolls inside and gently rocking them. They moved in and out of the boxes, role-playing as caregivers, nurturing their "babies" with love and care. This play supported their social-emotional development, helping them practice empathy and communication as they engaged in meaningful interactions with their peers.

As their creativity expanded, the children turned the boxes into robots. Poking their arms through holes, they moved stiffly, mimicking robotic motions and sounds. This imaginative play encouraged physical engagement, strengthened fine motor skills, and promoted cooperation as they worked together to bring their robot to life.

Their play continued to evolve as they gathered with educator Hope to discuss their next idea. Inspired by the thought of adventure, they decided to create a boat to cross a river filled with alligators! As they worked on the transformation, they noticed the triangular edge of the boat, which sparked yet another idea—the box could also be a house. Excitedly, they climbed inside, opening and closing the "door," joyfully calling out, "Knock, knock, knock!" and "Peek-a-boo!" Their play was filled with laughter, creativity, and collaboration.

Once the boat was complete, the children eagerly took turns climbing aboard. They practiced patience and turn-taking, waiting for their moment to set sail. While some children rode in the boat, others pretended to be sea creatures—whales, sharks, dolphins, and pufferfish—holding fish toys and playfully swimming alongside their floating friends. This experience encouraged problem-solving and emotional regulation as they navigated their imaginative ocean adventure.

Their creativity did not stop there. The children wanted their boat to move, so they helped attach scooters to the bottom, allowing them to "sail" across the classroom! The journey continued as they ventured into the hallway, excitedly greeting educators like Deb, Chase, and Maria along the way. This adventure fostered social interactions, confidence, and exploration, turning a simple idea into an engaging group experience.

Through this evolving play, the children developed essential life skills—collaboration, communication, creativity, and problem-solving. What started as an empty box became a cradle, a robot, a house, a boat, and a gateway to adventure. This experience truly embodied the spirit of “Create and Connect!”
