Exploring Spring and Caring for Our Earth

The preschool 2 class at RisingOaks Early Learning | John Sweeney engaged in a rich and meaningful exploration of spring, nature, and environmental care. The experience began with planting a variety of seeds alongside the educator. The children carefully observed the different shapes, sizes, and textures of the seeds. Together, they discussed what seeds need in order to grow, including soil, water, sunlight, and care. Some children shared their ideas, Karl said, “The seed needs water every day,” and “It will grow if we put it near the sun.”

As a group, we talked about spring and the changes that happen during this season. The children learned that spring is a time when plants begin to grow again after winter. Trees start to grow new leaves, flowers begin to bloom, and animals become more active. The children made connections, Austeja said, “I see flowers outside my house in spring,” and another adding, “The grass gets green again.”

To extend our learning, we went on a nature walk in the local park. The preschoolers were excited to explore and look for natural items such as pine cones, sticks, and acorns. They showed curiosity as they compared their findings and noticed different sizes and shapes in nature. Saylor said, “This pine cone looks like a little tree,” while Morgan said, “I found a really big stick!”

During the walk, the children discovered an area of the park where there was litter on the ground. This moment turned into an important learning opportunity about caring for the Earth. The preschoolers put on gloves and worked together to clean up the area. They showed responsibility, teamwork, and care for their environment. Austeja said, “We are helping the Earth feel better,” while another said, “People shouldn’t throw garbage on the ground.”

Through this experience, the children began to understand that taking care of nature is everyone’s responsibility. They learned that litter can harm animals, pollute soil and water, and affect the beauty of natural spaces. By cleaning up the park, they contributed positively to their community and demonstrated early environmental stewardship.

This learning experience supported curiosity, collaboration, and a growing awareness of how their actions can make a difference in the world around them.child picking up litterchildren putting litre into the garbage baggroup of children picking up garbage outside
