Welcoming Fall and exploring colours, creativity and halloween

  • Preschool 2

On October 1st, we welcomed the beautiful fall season in our preschool room through a variety of engaging, hands-on experiences at RisingOaks Early Learning | John Sweeney. We introduced the children to the changing season by talking about the beautiful colours of fall, Thanksgiving, and Halloween. Through these playful experiences, the children had opportunities to explore new materials, express their creativity, share their ideas, and connect with the excitement of the season.

To begin our fall exploration, the children participated in a collaborative pumpkin art experience. A large pumpkin outline was drawn on paper, and the children used orange paper cut-outs to fill it in. The children enjoyed contributing to the artwork and watching the pumpkin come to life as they added their pieces. This experience encouraged creativity, fine-motor development, and a sense of participation as the children worked together to create a shared piece of fall art.

Our sensory bin quickly became a favourite experience of the day! We created a magical green witch’s potion using glittery green water and added Halloween-themed materials, including little spiders, ghosts, orange pumpkins, bells, and natural wooden elements. As we explored the materials together, I demonstrated how moving them through the water could make the bells ring, creating sounds that almost felt like music. The children watched with curiosity and soon began repeating the movements themselves, again and again, excited to hear the sounds they could create. This simple discovery encouraged the children to experiment, explore cause and effect, and learn through repetition. The combination of water, glitter, textures, and sounds offered a rich sensory experience that invited the children to investigate at their own pace. It was wonderful to see how engaged they became, especially those who already enjoy water play, as they discovered something new within a familiar type of experience.

As we continued talking about Halloween, the children became excited to share their own ideas and experiences. Many eagerly began telling us what they planned to wear for Halloween. These conversations created opportunities for the children to express themselves, listen to one another, and share their anticipation for the upcoming celebration. It was wonderful to see how a seasonal conversation naturally encouraged communication and connections between the children.

We also explored the colours of fall through an open-ended fall tree painting experience. We offered yellow, green, and orange paint and invited the children to create their own interpretations of a fall tree. Rather than providing strict instructions, we encouraged them to explore the materials in ways that felt comfortable and interesting to them. The children could choose to use paintbrushes or their hands, giving them the freedom to experiment with different techniques and textures. Many children chose to use their hands, creating unique artwork through direct sensory exploration. As they painted, the children named the colours they were using and shared their favourite colours with one another. These conversations created opportunities to build colour recognition, language, and confidence in expressing personal preferences. By keeping the experience open-ended, we supported the children’s independence, creativity, and freedom to make their own choices while exploring the beauty of fall.

Through these experiences, we celebrated more than just the arrival of fall. We created opportunities for the children to explore through their senses, develop their creativity, strengthen their fine-motor skills, communicate their ideas, and make choices in their learning. Each experience offered something different, from contributing to a shared pumpkin artwork to discovering sounds in the sensory bin and expressing individuality through painting.

We look forward to continuing to build on the children’s curiosity and interests by offering meaningful, open-ended experiences that encourage exploration, imagination, and connection. As we move through the fall season together, we will continue to create opportunities for the children to discover, experiment, share, and learn through play.
