Fireworks in a Jar!

This month the toddlers used science to create, “fireworks!”
We added cola, food colouring and oil to a clear container. Then, the toddlers helped by adding in Mentos. The Mentos reacted with the cola and created streams of coloured bubbles that moved around like fireworks. The oil acted as a barrier so that the bubbles didn’t explode out of the container!
The toddlers labeled things like bubbles, pink, blue, green and purple.
Tong Tong was interested in the bubbles and enjoyed watching closely as they started to fizz their way up through the oil layer.
Theo enjoyed dropping the Mentos into the container and watching them sink down. Penny labelled many colours like pink, blue, green, and purple!
Maddie seemed to like the smell as she continued to sniff and say, “it’s like flowers.”
Nihal was also interested in the bubbles, he watched closely, pointed and shouted out as they went up!
Ava said, “oooh,” as she watched the Mentos drop down!
This experiment teaches the toddlers how things react with one another to create something new. The Mentos reacted with the cola to create bubbles! It also introduces the concept of sinking as they noticed the Mentos fall to the bottom rather than floating at the top or middle. Since the sinking Mentos was such an interest, we can continue our science experiments with a sink or float provocation!
