Exploring Nature Through Play

Print
Program Name: Toddler 2

In toddler two at Rising Oaks Oak Creek, we create hands-on experiences that support the whole child. In this activity, children explored natural materials such as wood slices, leaves, and flower petals through open-ended sensory play.

The calming nature of the materials promoted emotional well-being, while the shared environment fostered social skills like cooperation, communication, and respecting their peers around them. Together as a group the children were seen sharing and taking turns with the materials, collaborating as a team, and creating positive and meaningful play interactions.

This experience supported fine motor development as children grasped, pressed, and arranged materials. It also encouraged problem-solving, creativity, and independent thinking, as children experimented and expressed their ideas freely. As the children engaged with the materials, they began using their imagination and language to bring meaning to their play, sharing that they were making “pizzas”, “cookies”, “pancakes”, and “soups”. Their ideas demonstrated symbolic thinking, creativity, and early communication skills as they expressed their understanding of familiar experiences through play!

Through nature-based play, the children build meaningful connections to their environment while strengthening the foundations of engagement, expression, and well-being.

We look forward to continuing to provide enriching experiences that inspire curiosity, creativity, and a love for learning! Stay tuned for what these busy bees will get up to next month!
