We freed the glue in Preschool 1! The children used open-ended materials such as feathers, pom poms, popsicle sticks, foam stickers, etc. The preschoolers started to cover the boxes with glue, the harder the children squeezed the bottles the faster the glue came out. Of course, the glue didn’t stay in the containers long and the children began to fill their hands of glue while squishing it in between their fingers.
With freshly glued hands they picked up materials to add to the boxes. The feathers weren’t easy to rub off once it made contact with the glue, but that made it all more part of the fun! Together the preschoolers filled the boxes of glue, taking turns to mix the coloured glue.
When we provide the children with provocation like this, the children quickly learn how much is too much. We also embrace messy play in any way we can in this classroom. Not only does it provide a sensory output for those children seeking it, it allows them to have a safe space for messy play and creating a yes environment!
