During the first two weeks of our SKJK afterschool program, we observed the children’s growing interest with cars, so we extended their learning by inviting them to make their own bridges.
We prepared for them lots of popsicles sticks, pipe cleaners and tape. As the children created, planned, solved problems, and worked together while testing their ideas, they communicated throughout the activity. These are some of their conversations. “Be careful! We are building the bridge!”. -Rian. “We are making their bridge harder!”. -Jasper. “Ask me again if you need anything of these (pipe cleaners) because I’m holding it”. -Nita.
These conversations demonstrated creativity, teamwork, and problem solving as the children supported each other and shared materials.
During pick-up time, some children proudly showed their bridges to their families and excitedly explained their process. Their confidence and enthusiasm reflected the pride they felt with their creations and sharing their work with their families which helped celebrate their learning while strengthening the connection between home and the program. We look forward on our next activity together!
