The Animals Under The Waves

Preschool

From June to August, our preschool children at RisingOaks Early Learning | Our Lady of Fatima has been introduced to the creatures of the sea. Summer is a time when many of our families visit lakes and beaches. Learning about ocean/water animals was an engaging journey for both the children and the educator as co-learners, as our preschoolers discovered much more than just the simple ‘fish in the water’.

Diving into the Ocean

We kicked off our ocean adventure by introducing the children to the fascinating world beneath the waves. Our discussions began with a simple question: “What ocean animals do you know?” The excitement was well noticeable as the children eagerly shared their knowledge. Dolphins, whales, jellyfish, starfish, and crabs were among the creatures they mentioned, showcasing their enthusiasm and prior knowledge about the ocean. To deepen their understanding, we explored fun facts and stories about these amazing animals, encouraging curiosity and discussion.

Creating an Underwater Wonderland

In July and August, we transitioned from learning about ocean creatures to creating our own "Under the Sea Small World." This hands-on activity allowed our preschoolers to bring their ocean knowledge to life. They used a variety of materials - playdough, paint, sand, cut out seaweed, shells, and rocks. We even included some recycling materials too! - to craft a vibrant underwater scene. As they worked, the children learned about different textures and colors, and practiced fine motor skills through painting and arranging their sea-themed creations.

Our small world project was more than just a craft - it became a dynamic learning environment. Children took turns describing the sea creatures they added to their scene, practicing their verbal skills and deepening their understanding of each animal’s unique characteristics. Through this activity, they not only showed their artistic abilities but also engaged in imaginative play, fostering creativity and teamwork with their peers and educators.

During ocean habitat building,

  • Luna said “Coral reefs look like flowers under water.”
  • Mason added to Luna’s comment “I love beach, I can swim with starfish!” (As he put his arms out making starfish shape with his body)
  • Emilia: “I love starfish too. I am going to make a starfish for my mom.”

While we observed the fish in tank in the PS classroom

  • While we were watching the fish in the tank in the PS classroom, Quinn mentioned, “I think this fish came from the ocean.” Our educator wasn’t sure what kind of fish it was, but Lisa overheard and told us it was a Black Tiger Oscar.

We did more research about it, and learned that this fish actually comes from the Amazon River in South America! It was a great moment where educators and children learned together.

  • Kimberly even chimed in, saying, “I saw that fish before. It was swimming with me!”
