Exploring Sunflowers – From Discovery to Snack

  • Preschool 1

This month, the preschool children engaged in a wonderful hands-on learning experience as they explored real sunflowers at the tuff tray. Our pedagogical coach, Catherine, thoughtfully prepared this provocation by providing fresh sunflowers, tongs, and magnifying glasses to invite the children to investigate, discover, and learn through play.

The children were immediately drawn to the sunflowers and eagerly gathered around the tray to explore. As they touched the flower heads, they discovered that the sunflowers felt pricklier than they had expected. Their facial expressions showed surprise and curiosity as they experienced the different textures. Using the tongs, the children carefully picked out the yellow florets and explored the sunflower heads, gradually discovering the seeds hidden inside. They used their fingers to pick at the seeds, strengthening their fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and concentration.

As the exploration continued, the children naturally began sorting the different parts of the sunflowers. They separated the yellow pieces from the seeds, compared what they had collected, and worked alongside one another. Their play demonstrated how a simple invitation to explore can develop into meaningful learning as children follow their interests, share discoveries, and build on one another's ideas.

Throughout the experience, the educators encouraged the children's thinking through open-ended questions and conversations. The children became curious about why bees visit flowers, why sunflowers grow so tall, and how sunflowers follow the direction of the sun. These questions opened up opportunities to explore nature, living things, and the world around us while encouraging the children to observe, wonder, and think more deeply.

Our learning continued the next day! Building on the children's excitement and discoveries, we extended the experience by washing and baking the sunflower seeds together. The children were excited to see how the seeds they had carefully collected could be transformed into something they could eat. Once the seeds were prepared, we enjoyed them together as part of our afternoon snack. This meaningful follow-up connected our exploration of nature with food preparation and helped the children experience the journey from flower to food.

Through this experience, the children developed fine motor skills, sensory awareness, sorting and classification skills, curiosity, and early scientific thinking. They also practised collaboration, communication, and problem-solving as they explored alongside their peers. Most importantly, they learned that their questions and ideas can lead to further discoveries and new experiences.

This learning story reminds us of the value of play-based learning and following children's interests. By providing open-ended materials, a supportive environment, and opportunities to revisit our discoveries, we encouraged the children to become confident explorers, curious thinkers, and active participants in their own learning.
