As the children returned to school and settled into their new grades, we began the month by giving them an opportunity to share their summer vacation experiences, encouraging them to communicate confidently, listen to their peers and reflect on their personal experiences. We also worked together to discuss and establish classroom expectations and rules for the new school year, supporting the children in understanding responsibility, respect, cooperation and accountability.
Noticing their continued interest in arts and crafts, educator Rahul planned an engaging sensory art experience using shaving foam, food colouring, glue and paper. The children were encouraged to make independent choices by selecting their preferred colours and actively participating in preparing the materials. They observed how the colours changed as they mixed them into the shaving foam and discussed the different textures and the pleasant fragrance. Using popsicle sticks, they experimented with transferring and spreading the foam mixture onto paper, exploring different ways to create marks, patterns and textures. As the activity progressed, many children chose to use their hands, demonstrating curiosity and confidence in exploring the sensory properties of the materials. This experience encouraged creativity, fine-motor coordination, sensory awareness, experimentation and problem-solving while also providing opportunities for children to make decisions, express their ideas, and learn through hands-on exploration.
