Fostering Expression

Infant

We reached the last goal and expectations of How Does Learning Happen. This month we focus on expression, which is described as “every child is a capable communicator who expresses himself or herself in many ways." (HDLD pg.43) The infants express themselves in both verbal and non-verbal ways as we are beginning to hear words and see signs to communicate their wants and needs. Their facial expressions show the joy, wonder and excitement they communicate in their play as well as the sadness and frustration that may come along with trying to do a task or missing their Mommy’s and Daddy’s. We as educators engage and respond by sharing in their feelings and labelling them. Ted shows his wonder and curiosity as he explores the lights on the Christmas tree and listens to his educators label the different colours. Isla uses both her verbal and non-verbal communication to emphasize that she would like milk, as she walks to the fridge. As Sierra joins the room she shows her sadness that she is going to miss her Mommy, while Tami helps to co-regulate. As educators these are just a few of the expressions we foster in communication.
