During our art and craft experience, we provided the children with sparkly pink and blue tapes, colourful foam shapes, scissors, glue, paper cups and paper to explore their creativity and imagination. Our school-age children have a strong interest in arts and crafts, we wanted to extend their learning by offering open-ended materials that encouraged independent thinking and problem-solving. The children eagerly explored the materials and began decorating their cups with the sparkly tapes. Some children covered their cups entirely while others carefully placed the tape horizontally to create colourful patterns and designs. The children then selected foam shapes including hearts and circles and glued them onto their cups, experimenting with different colours, shapes and arrangements. One child demonstrated creative thinking by cutting her paper cup and transforming it into a bracelet showing how materials can be repurposed to create something new. Some children proudly shared their creations with their peers and explained the designs they had made. We encouraged them to think about what else their cups could become and some may have imagined their creations as gifts, decorative containers or special accessories. This experience supported fine motor development, hand-eye coordination, creativity as children cut, attached and arranged different materials. Overall, the experience provided opportunities for self expression, experimentation and collaborative learning while allowing each child to develop a unique creation at their own pace.
