Happy Holi Celebration. Throughout the year; Shari and I try to introduce the preschoolers in our room to diverse traditions, to promote fostering respect for different cultures from an early age. Teaching the children that the world is filled with diverse, beautiful, and meaningful traditions all around us. Holi is a Hindu festival that lasts two days. It is a spring time festival originally celebrated in Northern India, but now celebrated by Hindu people all over the world. It is also known as the festival of colour and celebrates the end of winter and the arrival of spring. It is a time for forgiveness, friendship and family. It is most known for its coloured powder runs (which happen on the second day of Holi), where people gather to throw gulal brightly coloured water and powder at one another, covering everyone and everything. The evening before the colour run is known as Holika Dahan, the end of winter. This is celebrated with a bonfire where people gather to say good-bye to winter and sing and dance to music. This year Holi fell on March 3rd and 4th 2026. We spent some time learning about the Holi celebration by listening to the story Festival of Colours. We practiced a few traditional Holi dances. Along with watching a short video about Holi which showed the beautiful and vibrant colour run in the carnival of colours. The carnival is where people of all ages throw water and powdered paint at each other in fun along with dancing and singing. I have attached the links below if you are interested in learning more about the Holi Celebration. The preschoolers created some wonderful splat art. We used cotton balls soaked in many different colours to “mimic” the Holi colour run activity. Using a wooden spoon, they hit the cotton balls creating a splat of beautiful colours. Each child creating a beautiful and unique Happy Holi card for their family to take home. This provides opportunities for the children to share and talk about all the things they learned about Holi with their families.
