Melting Crayons into Animal Moulds

Preschool 1

Today we worked on enhancing our fine motor skills, by peeling the paper off the crayons. “Why are we doing this?” Asked Lainey. “We are peeling the paper off to melt the crayons to make new crayons into different shapes”. Explained Christina. “Look I am peeling the paper off” Amelia shouted. “I am doing the yellow crayon” Isla explained. The preschoolers used their finer tips to carefully peel all the paper off the crayons, once done the preschoolers placed the crayons into the bowl and picked up another crayon to peel. “I did it” Isla shouted with excitement as she peeled off the paper. “How will they melt?” Asked Amelia. “We will put the crayons into the different moods, fill them up and put them into the oven. When they are in the oven they will start to melt, because the oven is really hot” explained Christina. “Make sure you wear oven mitts when you take them out” Reid shouted. The educators than carefully placed the crayons into the oven, we set a timer on the iPad and waited for the crayons to melt. Once the crayons were finished we carefully took them out, waited for them to cool down and showed the children what they had made. When the preschoolers were peeling the crayons, they were able to identify each colour, predict what was going to happen when they go into the oven, enhanced their fine motor skills and used their communication skills to ask questions to expand their thinking. The preschoolers had a fun time colouring with their crayons, and felt very proud of themselves for making their own crayons!
