The children in the Preschool 1 room have been enjoying doing some risky play. To expand on this, we decided to go sledding. We collected the sleds and went to the hill that is behind the child care. Last time we went sledding there were some ice slides so we wanted to see if they had melted. Once we got to the hill we were excited to see the some of the ice slides were still there. We discussed what we can do to help keep our bodies safe. We discuss that we need to move away from the bottom of the hill so we don’t get bumped. Now it was time to go down the hill. At first, we enjoyed using the sleds on the snow, but we wanted to see what would happen if we took the sleds on the ice. Emma held the sleds as we climbed in and since it was warmer the ice had melted a bit so we didn’t go down as fast. Joshua climbed into the sled and asked Scarlett to join him. She shook her head yes and climbed in. He held onto her so that she wouldn’t slip out. As they were going down the hill they were laughing. Once they got to the bottom Joshua said, “that was fun!” Lainey decided that she wanted to try and go down the hill backwards on the sled. As she started to go down she was laughing. Once she was at the bottom she said, “that was fun.” After a while we decided that we didn’t want to use the sleds anymore and decided to go down on our bums. Reid sat down on the hill and used his bum to scooch down. He tried one slide first and noticed that he didn’t go very fast so he went to another one to see if we would go down faster. As he was going down the other slide he said, “look at how fast I can go.” We continued to enjoy taking turns on the sleds as well as waiting our turn to go down the slides. Some benefits of Risky Play are building up our self confidence as we tried something new. It helps us develop resilience and risk assessment abilities. We love going sledding and are excited to go back again.
