School-age 1

This month at RisingOaks | Saint John Paul II, the children of School-age 1 collaborated with the School-age 1 educators to create our new School-age 1 board. As we start the new year, we have taken down our holiday board and have created a whole new board to reflect the end of the holidays and to get excited for the upcoming school months. The children have helped us out by creating the additions to the board, and by helping us put them up on the bulletin board in the centres hallway for their parents to see. By collaborating with the educators, the School-age 1 children have shown excitement by asking more questions about what our board will look like when finished and by asking when they will be able to stick their creations up on the board each day after creating them. By collaborating with the children, they were given the opportunity to get more involved in the program and create something for their parents to see. When creating the flowers for our board, the children all worked really hard to colour a creative and unique flower. Many of the girls wanted rainbow flowers, talking with their peers about the different colours in the rainbow. When making our 3D butterflies, the children explored science as they coloured on diffusion paper with markers and then sprayed it with water. The children talked about colour mixing and made predictions on what they thought would happen to their papers when sprayed with water. Aeddan predicted that the markers would spread everywhere, while Kobe watched her colours mix to create something new. Jayvon, who used a black marker watched as the black ink spread on his paper making 2 new colours, blue and purple. When we finished creating our flowers and butterflies, it was time to decorate our board. Together, the children found places on the school age board to stick their flowers and butterflies. The children laughed as they held their flowers up to their faces and placed what they made by their friends’ creations. The children showed how happy they were with their contributions to the board by showing their parents when they were picked up at the end of the day.
