There was a lot of commotion going on in Preschool 2 this month. We began to notice some pranks were being pulled on us by a little tricky leprechaun! First, we wanted to make bead bracelets, but we quickly realized that the tricky leprechaun had frozen our beads! We had to work together and use different tools to melt the ice to get our beads out. The next day, as we sat down for morning snack, we noticed that our milk was green! Shortly after snack, we started an art project using shaving cream and as the children began to paint with the shaving cream, they noticed there was green in the middle! That tricky leprechaun got us again!!
We read some stories about leprechauns to learn more about them and thought of things we can do to capture this leprechaun that’s been playing tricks on us. We sat down to brainstorm some ideas on how to capture him and the group came up with the following list:
How to Catch a Leprechaun
1. With Waves
2. Grapes
3. Call my parents they come to catch it with a giant grape
4. The ABC song
5. Gold
6. Rain showers and rainbows
7. Trap in box
The next day we decided to gather all the materials we needed to make our trap. After is was finished, we hid in the dark classroom and put our trap in the bathroom. The children heard some laughter coming from the other side of the door, and when we excitedly went to check if we caught him, he was not in our trap! But the children did notice that the toilet water was all green and there were gold coins everywhere!
While watching the children work together trying to catch something it makes me wonder what learning is actually happening here. To us we see some pranks being played but the learning going on is much deeper than that. We value children building connections and feeling like they are apart of something.
