All Kinds of Sensory!

This month we have exploring all kinds of sensory experiences! With a few new friends joining us, it provided a great opportunity to learn about their interests. We explored sinking and floating in our water table. Before adding the various objects in the water, we would ask the children if they thought it would go to the bottom or stay on top of the water? It was fun to see what quickly sunk to the bottom and what didn’t and we even noticed a few items that floated in the middle!

Continuing with water we added foam blocks with containers and scoops. The toddlers navigated with their hand eye coordination to scoop up the blocks and pour them into the buckets. We also explored a building sensory experience! Using their fine motor skills, the toddlers used shaving cream to stick the blocks together. Many of the children loved squishing the shaving cream between their fingers. Of course, we can’t explore sensory experiences without getting a little messy, we added a bit of water and potting soil to our sensory bin outside to explore the mud. Some gravitated towards it right away while others were a bit more hesitant to get messy.

The toddlers were seen communicating with one another as they engaged in pretend play making each other cupcakes or pies. We also saw pretend play during our moon dough sensory experience, as the children used cupcake liners to fill the moon dough and cut up straws to create their own candles. Lots of rounds of “Happy Birthday” were sung that day as everyone got their own moon dough cupcake!
