One morning, educator Sara had started to get an activity ready to help the children with their letter recognition. Sara started by taping one letter on paper plates. When the children started to gather around the table, Sara gave them each a paper plate with a letter on it. As the children were examining their plates, we began to talk about what letter they had. Each child got the first letter of their name.
As soon as Kingston sat down he shouted “LOOK K FOR KINGSTON!” Sara then gave each child a different coloured Bingo dabber. As Sara handed them out to everyone, we would also identify what colour they were using. The children are doing such a great job at colour recognition. The children were able to cover their plate with the bingo dabbers. After a few minutes we would rotate so everyone was able to use all the different kinds of colours. The children were able to enhance their turn taking skills while we shared the bingo dabbers. When the ink from the bingo dabbers were all dry on our plates, we took the tape off. Sara added a photo of each child under everyone’s artwork.
This activity also gave the children a sense of belonging. After they were hung up on the wall, during lunch the children would enjoy observing what letters and photos they can see. The photos really help the children identity which art piece belongs to each of their peers.
We will continue to give the children opportunities to help them continue with their letter and colour recognition through activities provided throughout all aspects of our daily programming.
