This month, we had the opportunity to celebrate Uttarayan! Uttarayan is also known as Kite Day, and celebrates the ending of winter and longer days coming. It also represents light, growth, and new beginnings. To celebrate, the toddlers each got their own kite to decorate. Using paint and cookie cutters, the toddlers practiced stamping on the kites. They then got to choose what colours they wanted the tails of their kites to be. The children were excited to swing their kites all around the classroom and watch them fly! We also read two stories about Kite Day, one shared by one of our families and one we found on our own. These stories taught us more about the traditions and importance of Uttarayan for those who celebrate.
By recognizing Kite Day in our classroom, we had the opportunity to learn about traditions reflected in our classroom community. Learning about different celebrations helps toddlers to gain an appreciation for diversity and also allows for us as educators to learn something new.
We wonder what other special days we can celebrate together this year? We would love to learn more about our families’ special traditions!
