The children in Preschool 2 were speaking about the fireworks they heard at night. We thought it was a perfect time to help them make the connection between the reasons why there were fireworks, Diwali! As we continued to help them understand what the celebration was about we learned it was the triumph of light over darkness and the celebration of new beginnings. We wondered how we can celebrate light? Some of the children responded with turning the lights on but one child said with candles, so the educators found a great Diwali candle holder recipe online. The children helped to gather the ingredients to make salt dough, we used some Perler beads to add to the candle holder for decorations. Once we finish all of the steps, we will get to bring it home to our families with a tealight candle inside!
We believe that the children are naturally curious about all celebrations and would love to be included in those holidays! It’s great way to teach them about every celebration so they can feel a sense of belonging and also the knowledge to decide how they would like to participate as they grow.
Now that the candle holders have dried we will paint them and be able to incorporate it into our home life. I wonder what celebration would come next?
