Fizzy Bunnies

Preschool 2

This month in Preschool 2 at RisingOaks Early Learning | St.Brigid, the children have been interested and engaged with a variety of different science experiments. One in particular the group seemed to enjoy was the “Fizzy Bunny” experiment.

A small group of children and an educator walked down to the craft room to retrieve the necessary materials. We made a list of our materials which consisted of baking soda, red food colouring, water, bunny molds, eye droppers and goggles. Once we had collected the materials, we began our experiment. First, we took turns adding the baking soda, the food colouring (which the educator did) and water. We used a spatula to mix the ingredients together. Once the ingredients were mixed together the educator placed it in the bunny molds. A group of children helped the educator walk it down to the freezer for 30 minutes.

After the timer went off and our bunnies were ready, we went back down to the freezer and brought them to our classroom. We then used eye droppers, vinegar and safety goggles to carry out the second part of our experiment. First, we all took a turn making a guess on what would happen once the vinegar hit the bunny mold. “I think it will bubble” one child guessed. “I think it will melt from the vinegar” said another. “I think it will get wet” suggested more children.

The children were very excited to then put the goggles on and use the eye droppers with vinegar. They carefully dropped the vinegar onto the bunny and watched for the reaction of what would happen. The bunny began to dissolve and the children pointed out that the bunny started to have bubbles. We talked about when the vinegar and baking soda mix together it causes a chemical reaction causing bubbles and a fizzy look to the bunny.

It was great to see the children using their cognitive skills to predict the outcome of the bunnies and discuss as a group what they enjoyed about the experiment. The children are very excited for more experiments to come in the future!
