Over the past few weeks the children have shown interest in the plants in the classroom. Educator Trish has some spider plants at home so she brought some in for us to take a closer look at.
One morning we decided to plant some spider plant babies, but after some reach we found out that the scientific name for the spider plants was called “Chlorophytum Comosum.” Before we started to plant, we got some materials ready, which included soil, pots, spoons, and our spiderettes.
We first observed the plants closely and noticed the little roots at the bottom that were beginning to sprout. Harrison and Theo really wanted to scoop the soil, so they were the first two up. The two of them used their fine motor skills to scoop up the soil with the spoons and place it into the pots. Ava was asked if she wanted a turn and she said, “No Gross!” So instead she helped Trish put the spiderettes into the pots. Kingston then added a few handfuls of soil to the top after the plants were in the pots. We now have two spiderettes in pots that we were watching very closely as they grow!
A few days went by and we decided to do some more planting. Before the Christmas break, the children worked together to put some paper and water into molds to make our own pots. One day we thought it might be a good experiment if we added some soil and seeds. We will continue to use our observation skills to watch the plants grow. While we were planting, we explained to the children that plants need lots of sunlight and water for them to grow. We will make sure we keep them by the window and give them water.
Over the next couple of weeks, we hope to see our spiderettes and the seeds that we planted grow!
