Hands-on Art Adventure

Preschool 1

The children in Preschool 1 have continued their engagement in a variety of process art experiences. From spinning mirror discs across the paper to track their paths, to marble painting and spray painting the snow, these art experiences have been well loved!

One activity that was a particular interest was extending the preschoolers’ learning by mixing their joy of building with creative expression. The educators brought out Duplo Lego blocks and a variety of paints. After dipping the Duplo Lego blocks into the paint, we stamped them onto the large paper on the table. Afterwards, the children began to expand on this activity by building and stacking the blocks together to create larger and different shaped stamps. Thus, showing their educators that combining two of their favourite activities, building and art, was a hit for this group!

These open-ended experiences encourage children to make choices, create freely and experiment to deeper their understanding of how things work. They build creativity, confidence, early math and science concepts and even problem-solving skills. We wonder what would happen if we expanded this discovery into even more materials, experiences, and textures. What would it be like to paint on a shiny surface like tinfoil, or fabric that would absorb the paint? What about cotton rounds that would disperse the colour as it absorbed a water colour paint? We can’t wait to see where these expansions will take us!
