This month, the preschoolers of Preschool 1 were extremely excited about all of the snow that we got and have been showing an increasing interest in snowmen. This of course led to many questions about building a snowman on our playground. However, when we went to do this, the preschoolers quickly realized that we didn’t have enough snow, and the snow that we did have was not the right kind. With some quick thinking, we decided to make a snow castle instead. The preschoolers worked together to pack the snow into the bucket, tip it over, and lift it up to reveal a snow castle underneath! They also worked together to break the snow castle, giggling as many of them said, “let’s do it again!”
The preschoolers’ flexibility was a great reminder of how sometimes when things don’t go to plan, we can always find another solution! It’s important for preschoolers’ emotional development to model these skills alongside them. This was also a great experience for enhancing the children’s social skills as they communicated and worked together. It also taught us that snow can be used for more than just snowmen- it is such a valuable natural learning resource!
We hope that we have the opportunity to get more snow this winter, and hopefully put our teamwork and flexibility skills to work in building an actual snowman! We wonder if there are any other snow sculptures or structures that the preschoolers would enjoy making?
