Do you want to know how to make some yummy cupcakes? The Preschool 2 friends want to show you how they made cupcakes one day at RisingOaks Early Learning | St. Brigid! First, we grabbed some shaving cream, sparkles, pom poms, tongs and cupcake trays for making the cupcakes and we decided to use our tuff tray for this activity so we had lots of room. When the children saw the tuff tray, some found that the tuff tray was dirty, so other children suggested, “Let’s clean it up so we can put everything on it!” We put the soap and water on the tuff tray, and the children grabbed cloths to wipe out the dirt. When the tuff was dry, it was time for the cupcakes. We put the shaving cream in the trays, and used tongs to put the pom poms on top. Some friends tried to write some letters on the tuff tray and showed others that was the letter in their names.
Through this learning activity, we developed our fine motor skills by picking the pom poms up with the tongs, and cleaning up the tuff tray helped us develop our gross motor skills as well. We also had so much fun with sensory play during this activity! The educators enjoyed seeing the children bring in letter cognition to the activity as well.
During the activity the educators overheard the children sharing their past experiences of helping their parents make cupcakes and donuts at home! This was a good opportunity for them to develop their language skills by listening to others, using memory recall and communicating with their peers.
We noticed that children are interested in making all kinds of food during the day, and kitchen area is always a popular place for them to play. Children love to pretend they are cooking with the toy food, cups and trays. We would love to extend this learning by organizing different activities for them to cook food that they like. It is always a good opportunity for us to think about the festivals that people celebrate and maybe we could try to make some food for all of us!
