Mummy Creations

  • School-age 1

The children were invited to create their own spooky mummies using cardboard, yarn, glue, and googly eyes. They eagerly explored the materials and began wrapping yarn around their cardboard shapes. Some children carefully wrapped the yarn around and around, while others experimented with crossing the yarn in different directions to create their own unique designs. They used their fingers to hold, pull, and guide the yarn, showing concentration and patience throughout the process. Once the yarn was in place, the children excitedly added googly eyes, giving their mummies funny and spooky personalities. There was lots of conversation, laughter, and sharing as the children looked at one another's creations and talked about what made each mummy special.

This creative experience provided opportunities for the children to strengthen their fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and ability to manipulate materials. Wrapping and positioning the yarn required control and coordination, while choosing where to place the googly eyes encouraged decision-making and creativity. The children also demonstrated persistence as they worked through loose or tangled yarn and adjusted their techniques. Through this open-ended art experience, the children were able to express their imagination and develop a sense of pride and ownership over their creations.

Going forwards, we can continue to build on the children's interest in spooky and imaginative creations by offering different loose parts and recycled materials for them to design their own characters and activities. We can also invite the children to create stories about their mummies, giving them opportunities to develop language, storytelling, social interaction, and imaginative play.
