Painting the Snow

Preschool 2

This month in Preschool 2 at RisingOaks Early Learning | St. Brigid, the children have been enjoying the snow outside. Unfortunately, there were a few days where we were stuck inside and couldn’t get out to play due to cold temperatures. The educators thought it would be interesting to see how the children react to bringing snow inside the classroom.

When the educators brought it in the classroom the children ran over with excitement, “SNOW” they shouted! The educator asked the children if they would like to try painting the snow? The children said “yes!” Next, the educator asked the group what tools we could use to paint the snow? The most common answers were paintbrushes and our hands.

The children helped the educators water down some paint and walk it over to the tuff tray. From there, they collected the paintbrushes and began. The children started to mix colours together to make new colours. “Look, I made green!” A child said to their peer. They were able to mix the colour blue and yellow to create the colour green. This sparked an interest in a few other children to mix other colours together. The children then started questioning how the snow would feel in their hands with the paint. The educator said “well, try it and see how it feels!” The children then put their hands into the snow and said “ohh this feels cold, but good at the same time.” One child even asked for mittens on as they said “when I play with snow, I wear my mittens so my hands don’t get cold.”

It was great to see the children’s team building skills emerge as they worked together to build different snowmen, animals and mountains. We wonder what else we could do with the snow? Or maybe we could bring some paints outside once the temperatures warm up to decorate our whole playground!
