Remembrance Display

School-age 2

For the month of November, the School-age children at RisingOaks Early Learning | St. Brigid, wanted to take the time to reflect on Remembrance Day. It was our turn to do the front board in the front foyer and the educators thought this would be a perfect place to display our learning. The educators asked the children what they think of when they heard the words “Remembrance Day.” Many of the children took the time to think about it and here were some of the answers. “I am thankful for my dad because he went to war,” “The crosses are for all the soldiers that died,” and another child said, “they go to the cemetery to pay their respect to loved ones.”

After this conversation, we decided to create our own crosses. We used red yarn and sticks that we gathered from the field. The children used the yarn to wrap around the sticks placed together like a cross. Then they glued a black pompom in the centre to create a poppy. The children also wanted to make a solider. We used the projector to trace out a solider on large brown paper. Collectively as a group we decided to paint the solider black.

Finally, we wanted a way to share the poppy, as a group we talked about some options. In the end we decided to do a black and white photo of our hands. From there we used cupcake liners to create our poppies. The children coloured them red and used a black crayon for the middle.

Throughout the process the children took the time to learn about poppies and understand what they represent during Remembrance Day. The educators put all of our hard work up on display in the front entrance. We were so excited to see all of our creations on display and proudly showed off our work to our families.
