This month, the Preschool 2 program has been falling into some exciting sensory explorations! We began by bringing the beauty of fall indoors with leaves, acorns, and loose parts for the children to touch, scoop, move, and investigate. As we explored, the children also started noticing the changes happening outside. We talked about how the leaves are changing colours and how the air is becoming cooler as we move further into fall.
To add some Halloween excitement, we created another sensory bin using orange-coloured water, fall leaves, eyeballs, cups, and spoons. The children quickly turned the sensory bin into their own pretend kitchen. They excitedly mixed, scooped, poured, and stirred as they created cups of juice, coffee, pumpkin pie, and pudding. It was wonderful to see how one simple sensory experience could inspire so many creative ideas.
Through these sensory experiences, the preschoolers had many opportunities to use their imagination and express their creativity through open-ended play. As they scooped, poured, stirred, and transferred materials, they were strengthening their fine motor skills and developing hand-eye coordination. Their creations also encouraged rich language as they named their “food,” shared what they were making, and invited their friends and educators into their play. Most importantly, the children were learning through hands-on exploration, making their own choices, testing their ideas, and discovering that everyday materials can become anything they imagine.
Where will our imaginations take us next? We will continue building on the children's growing interest in sensory and pretend play by introducing new fall and Halloween-inspired materials, textures, and loose parts. We will encourage the children to continue experimenting, creating, and sharing their ideas with one another. As the season changes around us, we will also look for opportunities to explore real leaves, pumpkins, nature, colours, and other signs of fall, helping the children make connections between their sensory experiences and the world around them.
