Sensory Exploration with Oobleck

This month, we explored our sensory skills through a hands-on experience as we created Oobleck together, incorporating additional sensory materials such as coloured sand and sprinkles. Initially, the children used their hands to explore the Oobleck, eagerly immersing themselves in the texture. They expressed curiosity and made meaningful comparisons, describing how it resembled milk in appearance, smell, and consistency. This demonstrated their growing ability to observe, compare, and communicate their sensory experiences.

This sensory experience supported children’s cognitive development by encouraging exploration, curiosity, and hands-on learning. As the children manipulated the Oobleck and additional materials, they developed fine motor skills, sensory awareness, and early scientific thinking through observing and comparing textures. The activity also promoted language development as children described their experiences, while supporting social skills, confidence, and creativity through shared exploration and discussion.

Building on the children’s curiosity and sensory exploration, we wonder how they will respond to experimenting with different consistencies by adjusting the Oobleck recipe or introducing new tools such as scoops, funnels, and containers. We also wonder how adding vocabulary, books, or questions about liquids and solids may deepen their thinking and support further inquiry, creativity, and expression.
