Tie and Dye Activity

School-age 2

Lately, the children in School-age 2 have been involved in mixing different colours to see what colours they can create, so the educators decided to do a tie and dye activity where the children will have the opportunity to mix different colours of their choice.

First, the children explored different ways of folding, twisting, and tying the fabric before applying the colourful dyes. The children experimented with colour combination and patterns, observing how the dye spread across the fabric.

During this process, the children demonstrated creativity, patience, and problem solving as they decided how to design their pieces. They were very excited to reveal the final patterns after the fabric was untied. The children were very curious to see how their creations turned out after washing and drying the shirts. Everyone was excited to see the beautiful and vibrant patterns they had made.

The educators overheard the children as they shared their thoughts with their peers about the activity such as, “I like mixing the colours to see what happens,” and “Mine looks like a rainbow!” Another child shared “I can’t wait to see what my pattern looks like!”

Through this activity, the children were able to express their creativity and imagination by creating their own masterpieces. They expressed their fine motor skills while folding and tying the fabrics with elastics. The children also learned about colours, patterns, and design. Most importantly, we had to practice patience and team work!

The children were proud of their unique creations and enjoyed sharing their designs with their peers, and we all had our beautiful tie and dye shirts to wear on the Holi celebration day.
