This month the children expressed their interest in nature, especially in snow. They have been engaged in many active ways. One day the educator decided to bring a different type of tool to play in the snow with: dried out markers. The children were dipping them into the snow and checking if the ink would appear on the surface. They found out that the snow, which is frozen precipitation, dissolves the ink in the markers and makes them be usable again.
Olivia and Noah tried to print their first names and shone with pride once successful. Hudson B used a bright red to draw a picture of volcano; it looked like the lava was erupting through the white snow. Hudson T was very excited to show off his piece of chocolate which he made by colouring a chunk of icy snow brown. Some of the children were creating a rainbow by using all the colours of markers. Grayson used the blue marker to cover the snow and create an ocean; he was able to tell a little story about his ocean that had a swimming dolphin and orca whale.
This activity encouraged the children to explore their imagination and creativity.
They had an opportunity to engage with nature, foster social interaction among their peers, and to master their fine motor skills. The children also were able to learn about the importance of recycling materials by repurposing things that usually could be thrown away.
