Winter Outdoor Play

In this winter season, children have been engaging in many different activities. Some children enjoy playing soccer during all seasons such as Charlie, Claire Q, James, and Dax. Charlie said, “let’s play soccer," and Claire Q said, “yeah let’s play.” Soccer is great for children’s physical and mental well being as it gets them moving. Soccer also teaches children team play in order to focus on the goal of getting the ball in the net. Soccer fosters their gross motor skills as well.
Other children, like Avery, said, “let’s dig holes in the snow” and Willa agreed, saying “yeah, let’s do that.” Andrea added, “I will work on doing holes on the other part of the hill.” Making holes in the snow with other classmates teaches children helping skills, cooperation skills, team working skills, and digging skills.

Other children like to drive their cars in the snow such as Yug, Denis, and Philippe. Yug, Denis, and Philippe often show off their toy vehicles from home and say, “Rita look at my car!” Driving toy cars in the snow teaches children that real life cars have to drive in the snow and sometimes they get stuck or slip.

Leila G, Aubrey, Arianna, and Willa were shaping snow into round and oval shapes. With some questions, they said that they were making ducks. With this activity, the children are able to gain sculpting and moulding skills.

To add to the children’s outdoor play, we can add things like obstacle courses, running race tracks, food colouring to the snow, sensory play of snow, and even adding water and soap in different buckets to add cars to.
