November is a time to reflect and remember those that have fought for our freedom. School-age 3 has taken time every year to reflect on the importance of this day, and share stories of how this day has been remembered in the past. As we are the older group, the children are able to engage in meaningful conversation and reflection, engaging their critical thinking skills as they learn more about soldiers and their sacrifices. The group decided to create a poster in honour of all the fallen soldiers.
Charlotte wanted to create a soldier dawned with a full uniform, so she reached out to a nearby educator in the program, asking to look up what soldiers wore so that she was able to recreate the uniform. She ensured she added in some of her own creative touches, envisioning what a soldier may look like in her own eyes. "I need to use the army colours" she said has she began. Seeing this process, Ariah then took it upon herself to draw her own soldier to add to the poster.
Meanwhile, Emily and Lucy were colouring poppies. Emily folded the petals so that it would appear the poppies has a 3-D effect to them, enabling them to stand out. While colouring the poppies the children began conversation surrounding the poem, in Flanders field, so they decided to add this poem to the poster as well, adding more significance to their creation.
This group experience provided a great way to commemorate our soldiers and take a moment to reflect and remember. Stop by the wall and take a look.
