The children in the preschool room have been practicing their letters through various engaging experiences such as going through the alphabet, learning each letter's sound, identifying words that begin with that letter, and practicing tracing each letter. Educator Adeena extended on this interest by organizing a letter scavenger hunt. This activity involved laminated word search sheets and a bin filled with Lego letter pieces. The children would pick a letter from the bin and then use a whiteboard marker to mark the corresponding letter on their laminated sheets. Once they found most of their letters on the sheet, they picked a new letter from the bin and continued the process. By searching for letters on paper without prior knowledge of which letters they would be tasked with finding, the children practiced adaptability and flexibility, sharpening their ability to recognize and differentiate between various letters spontaneously. Additionally, the activity fostered a sense of independence and autonomy as each child took ownership of their chosen letter, driving their motivation to locate and mark it on the paper. Through this engaging and hands-on approach, children not only strengthened their letter recognition skills but also enhanced important cognitive abilities such as problem-solving and decision-making in a playful and interactive way.
