This past month, the children in School-age 1 brought a sense of belonging to their program as they created individualized garden stones for their dad’s for Father’s Day. The excitement was felt in the program as educators Keri and Josephine brought in a bag of concrete, which sparked lots of curiosity and questions from the group. “How does that work?” “Are we going to mix that!?” “What colour is the mixture?”, were some of the questions that were brought forward. Keri and Josephine explained to the group the step by step process in which we were going to create the garden stones. The group watched in amazement as Keri mixed the concrete with water and it began to thicken. “Wow, look at that! It is getting harder as you mix it!” the group explained. As the mixture was prepared, it was dumped into individual tin pans for each child. Using their creative expression, the group utilized loose parts to design their own personalized stone. Some children used stones to make faces, while others scattered theirs with gems and beads. This entire process gave the children another perspective in using everyday items to create something that will provide meaning to the one’s that they care about. The group were so excited to share their creations with their dad’s!
