Letter Recognition Strips

Preschool

For this activity, the Preschool children engaged in their turn taking skills as they worked on identifying various laminated strips that all indicated a certain letter to search for. To further enhance this experience as some of the children prepare to go off to school, listed down the strip were a variety of other letters, making it trickier to find the right letter! Ie. The uppercase and lowercase of the letter A (A and a) mixed in with letters M, W and X. Once they were both identified, the children used small gems to place on top of the uppercase and lowercase letter.

Learning in this activity was focused on letter recognition, which helps to develop and build upon reading and writing skills as children continue to develop. This is a key component of literacy development. During this time, children with a better understanding of letter recognition assisted some of the younger children who are currently in the process of learning the concept of letter recognition.

In addition, searching for these letters also had the children focusing intently on the task at hand to ensure they identified and chose the appropriate letter. This also gives the children a chance to build on their thought process and self-confidence in their abilities.
